SIEGE TO MADRID

1936 - 1939, the Spanish Civil War in the images of the "Archivo Fotográfico de la Delegación de Propaganda y Prensa de Madrid during the Civil War"

Created for the 80th anniversary of the conflict, previewed for Italy and sponsored by the Instituto Cervantes de Milán, the exhibition consists of about 60 digital reproductions of photographic prints, selected from the most beautiful of the approximately 3000 images preserved by the fund “ Archive Fotográfico de la Delegación de Propaganda y Prensa de Madrid during the Civil War " of the " Ministerio de Educación, Cultura y Deporte. Archivo General de la Administración ”. On the false line of the cataloging used at the time the fund was born, the selection tells the first moments of the rebellion of the coup army, the popular mobilization in defense of Madrid besieged by Franco's troops, aerial bombardments, the suffering of civilians , the war in the regions around the capital, life in the rear.

Authors of most of the selected photos are Manuel Albero and Francisco Segovia, founders in 1930 of the Albero y Segovia Información Gráfica photo agency. Specializing in sports photography, collaborators of various newspapers, at the outbreak of the conflict they became war photoreporters entering the History of Spanish Photography thanks to the quality of their images. For a tragic paradox, the photographs preserved in the fund - realized to document the fascist military aggression against the Republic, to denounce to the whole world the consequences of the bombings of the cities and show the civilian victims caused by them - were used at the end of the war by the Franco regime to pursue the Republican militiamen portrayed.
